Up until recently, the only identical twins I knew that were currently “writing” music were John and Edward, better known as “Jedward”, or as I simply call them – “those two pricks from X-Factor”. So it was refreshing recently to come across an act that has actually been around since 1995. Tegan and Sara, who, as mentioned are identical twins, are a Canadian indie outfit hailing from Calgary who have been starting to hit the commercial airwaves in North America more than ever before – so much so, TMK are going to give them a UK debut on our next radio show.
The following track, as power-poppy as it sounds, is infectous. Whether you brand it as pop, commercial indie, or simply a chart hit, it’s a very listenable introduction to this interesting duo. Named “I’m Not Your Hero”, this track has mainstream success written all over it. It is taken from their new album Heartthrob, which is due out in January 2013 – and is widely tipped to be the song that gets them noticed on this side of the pond.
Usually not my taste, this track made my ears stand up somewhat, mainly due to the powerful electronic led chorus which works perfectly with the duos unique but harmonised vocals – the sound could almost turn into dubstep, but they constantly stay on the safe side of the musical barrier, and produce a “vanilla” but altogether emphatic pop anthem which would go down as a favourite at their forthcoming gigs.
Have a listen below, and be sure to tune into the next TMK to hear it…
