Muse are probably the most talented Rock band the UK have produced. They can do no wrong in my eye’s, from their earlier work with tracks like “New Born” and “Plug in Baby”, I have followed them through their musical odyssey religiously. Their legendary guitar riff’s and modern take on Rock have made them one of the best live bands currently touring the globe. The whole world must have seen their performance of “Survival” at the Olympic closing ceremony, not the most popular, but Muse stole it! Boris Johnson should have ditched his ‘drunk dad at a wedding’ dancing, and moshed his face off to that tune! Anyway, the point of “Survival” was also to promote their new album, The 2nd Law, and the single “Madness” is their next musical missile.
For a lot of people “Madness” took them by surprise, but Muse have been slipping Electronic Rock tracks in their albums for some time, the most recent for me “Undisclosed Desires”, which helped show the eagerly listening world that the band could experiment with their sound successfully.
For me “Madness” has not just a hint, but a beautiful big smack of “A Kind of Magic” about it, perhaps my favourite Queen track of all time. With that stunning wavy base line and Matthew Bellamy’s “some kind of madness” lyrical introduction, this is something very special. Perhaps the best description I have read of this track is “soft rock sex music”, and they are not wrong. If you find yourself with a new lady friend for the evening, put this track on in the background, just make sure you have fresh pants at the ready before the drinks start to flow (cheeky wink).
The 2nd Law promises to be the best album Muse have released so far, and with “Survival” and “Madness”, they have demonstrated a stunning amount of originality and versatility, qualities that few bands can produce, just make sure you get in the queue for the 1st October. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
