You may remember the Slow Skies review i did last month, a great up and coming Dublin band. It really is quite staggering how much good music is coming out if Irland at the moment, and Kodaline might just be my favorite folk drug to date, and not a Ikea kitchen cabinet in sight (cheeky wink).
Kodaline (orginally known as 21 Demands) actually appeared on a Irish reality tv show, where they came to the attention of the public, and thank god, not the attention of that frosty haired weirdo Louis Walsh (sorry Louis fans). Their re-birth as the band we know now came about in 2011, which has led to the simply brilliant track “All i want”.
The first thing i will say about this track is watch the video, it is truely inspiring. it follows a man with a monsterous face, showing how he deals with the obvious prejudice at work, and his efforts to get closer to a woman in his office. I wont spoil the outcome, but it is a moving peice of minature cinema
Anyway i’m getting sidetracked. “All I Want” might well be one if the most beautiful folk tracks I have listened to, particularly because of Stephen Garrigan’s mind blowingly good vocals. The pitch of his voice is stunning, much higher than I am used to with folk bands, but it is one of the great ingredients that give this band their unique sound. The music builds and builds with this one, like a galloping herd of horses running from a mischeivous dog and his highly pissed off owner. The music continues to grow into a really quite stunning finale, the guitar work is superb, almost Colplay esque when they were at the height of their powers, mind blown! Once again.
Kodaline are definitely a new but very bright spark in the musical cogs. The bands new EP is fantastic, and is going to build them a very solid fan base, including one very excited music knight. 2013 will be the year of kodaline!
