Fink, otherwise known as Fin Greenall, is a talented 42 year old Cornish multi-tasker who can play, produce, DJ, as well as write some sumptuous guitar-led tracks. Now based in Brighton, together with his colleagues Guy Whittaker and Tim Thornton, Fink, as the triumvirate are collectively known, have come up with a track called “Looking Too Closely”. This majorly caught the eye of everyone at TMK Towers recently, so much so, we just have to tell you about it…
Fin himself has a solid background of recording music, not only with his own albums, but also co-writing for other artists, including Amy Winehouse. His music is thought provoking, personal, and often dreamy, and these characteristics are all present in the quite stunning “Looking too Closely”. The vocals are close, the guitar melody is simple and clean, and his voice is complemented magnificently with the piano, keyboards and light percussion.
The track begins with a melodically mesmeric start, with a guitar riff which is eventually joined by a few simple piano notes – and then in come Fin’s quite delightful vocals. His words are up close, personal, and direct: “This is a song about somebody else So don’t worry yourself”. – and it soon becomes evident that his song is also intended to be calmfully reassuring: “don’t push yourself / you don’t want to hurt yourself”.
It is easily a stand out track due to the fact it is uncomplicated, authentic, and just ultra chilled.
Twinned with the smooth solid vocal, this gorgeous outpouring of love and care is also boosted by the slow but methodical percussion, which comes to a crescendo about two minutes in. The songs strengths are in its simplicity, and its recurring comforting chorus. This bursting of guitar is not dissimilar to the kind of shoegazing moments you’d get from Coldplay or M83 – it’s natural, and it’s perfect. Behind it all is a dreamy keyboard soundscape which is exposed mid-way through the track before the beat rejoins us once again towards the end of the track.
Vocally, it’s a climatic haven of harmonising brilliance from Fink, which is never overpowering, is very much understated, but is easily a stand out track due to the fact it is uncomplicated, authentic, and just ultra chilled.
The new album Hard Believer, is due out in a couple of months, and whilst we’ve heard small samples, we cannot wait to have the disc in our hands
Fink is touring in Europe throughout the Summer and then over in the States come September, you’d be silly not to catch them live. With the backing of XFM, a massive Youtube following, as well as the other established social media portals, we can only see better things coming out of this trio, and we can’t wait to listen to more. The new album Hard Believer, is due out in a couple of months, and whilst we’ve heard small samples, we are very excited at the thought of having this disc in our hands.
